Take the Sea-nic route at the Golden Pool’s 4th annual boat race!

As operations at the Golden Pool wind down for the season, it’s time for the fourth annual Build Your Own Cardboard Boat contest on Friday, Aug. 25th at the Golden Swimming Pool.

Recreation Services Co-ordinator Kim Bryan encourages residents to come out for this popular event that will see cardboard boats of all sizes vie to be the first to cross the finish line.

“This event is so fun,” says Bryan. “It’s held on one of the last full days of pool operations, so come and end the summer with a big soggy bang!”

Boats can be big and intimidating to scare off the competition or smaller - which may not be as stable, but may be quicker in the water. The event will start off with a few heats to see whose craft is worthy of the high seas.

“The Cardboard Boat Race does not disappoint,” Bryan notes. “Last year’s event was hilarious as usual. So get serious about building your boat and building it well. And be prepared for that serious attitude to dissipate when you show up to race and see how quickly some of the boats sink. My personal fav is the ‘slow leak’ where it takes a while for the boat to go down but its dedicated captain remains paddling furiously at its helm.”

Costumes and creativity are encouraged at the event and there may just be a few different race categories based on who comes out to participate.

“People can make their boats and costumes as ridiculous as possible, but all racers have to be in the craft. No outrigging swimmers allowed,” says Bryan.

To participate, the only requirement is to have your boat built ahead of the race start time of 5 p.m. There will be pre-race building sessions at the Golden Youth Centre on Aug.17 and Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. to 1p.m. Limited supplies provided, so bring your own cardboard and duct tape!

On race day, there will be an onsite building session from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Only cardboard and duct tape are allowed to build your boat. Paint is ok, but it must be cured 48 hours in advance. Racers may only use standard paddles, no kayak paddles, please.

As in previous years, Bryan says the main goal off the race is to ensure that the Manager of Recreation Services does not cross the finish line.

“It’s important that no matter who comes out for the race, we have to beat the Manager of Recreation Services!”

The Pool will be operating on a reduced schedule during its final week of operations from Monday Aug. 21 to Friday Aug. 25. See the updated schedule by clicking HERE.

We will host our Bonus Days from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. from Aug. 28 to 30; however the schedule is subject to change.

While some programs have changed, we are still offering plenty of private lessons and we hope to accommodate many requests we’ve received over the last few weeks. Contact the Golden pool at or 250-344-2118.
